SMALL BUSINESSES IN HIGH UNEMPLOYMENT OR LOW INCOME COMMUNITIES GET A BOOST FROM UNCLE SAM!

PORTLAND, OR –Small businesses located in economically distressed communities will now receive priority for Federal Government purchases exceeding $100,000 through the Historically Underutilized Business Zone (HUBZone) Program.  Through these contracts, small businesses can revitalize their local economies and stimulate business activity by creating new jobs and investments in their local communities.

In Oregon, Urban HUBZones include census tracts in the cores of Portland, Eugene, Medford, Corvallis, Forest Grove, La Grande and Seaside.  In Oregon, Rural HUBZone counties include Baker, Coos, Crook, Curry, Douglas, Grant, Hood River, Josephine, Klamath, Lake, Linn, Malheur, Morrow, Wallowa and Wheeler. Southwest Washington HUBZones include all of Lewis, Skamania, Klickitat, and Pacific counties and urban census tracts in Vancouver and Longview.   All federally recognized Native American Reservation Lands are also designated as HUBZones.

To benefit from this program businesses must be certified. Potential applicants can determine if their company is located within a HUBZone, apply for certification, or obtain a list of certified firms by accessing SBA’s web site at www.sba.gov/hubzone.

For additional information contact Sam Goldstein, the SBA Regional HUBZone Liaison, at 503-326-5101 or samuel.goldstein@sba.gov.  Assistance in Oregon is available for preparation of applications at the Government Contract Acquisition Program (GCAP) at 1-800-497-7551.
