From 1990 to 2000, the state of Oregon had a population increase of 20%, Douglas County increased 6%, and Drain stayed almost the same.

  Oregon has the oldest population of all states west of the Mississippi.  Drain is in Douglas County.  From 1960 to 1994, Oregon had a 74% increase in population to over 3 million.  During this same time period, Douglas County had a population increase of 42% while Drain had only a 4.5% increase in population.  Douglas County's growth was ranked 32 of Oregon's 36 counties during 1990-1994.

    The 1994 assessed value for North Douglas County was $282,248,801.  Douglas County per capita income is 33 of the 36 counties.  Drain's median family income is 9th of the 12 Douglas County cities.  21% of children in Drain live in a single family household.

    Median family income in 1990 was $22,656 for Drain and $26,637 for Douglas County.  North Douglas County had 14% of the population with incomes below the poverty level in 1990.

    Drain's economy has been based on the timber industry.  Like many other logging communities in the northwest, Drain also experienced mill closings and job loss.  As indicated by the above graph, the population has been very stable over the past fifty years.
