Mission Statement:
The Moultrie County Historical and Genealogical Society's purpose
is to bring together those interested in the history and genealogy of Moultrie County, to discover, collect, and
preserve any material which may help establish or illustrate the history of the area and all its
people, to provide for the cataloging and for the preservation of such material and for its accessibility to those
who wish to examine or study it. Also, to stimulate and encourage an interest in the genealogy of our
ancestors, to promote and publish material in a quarterly publication covering Moultrie County, other
counties, neighboring states, and other areas from which our settlers and ancestors came.
Moultrie County
Moultrie County was formed from the Illinois counties of Macon and Shelby in 1843.
It is divided into eight townships - Lovington, Lowe, Dora, Jonathan Creek, Sullivan, Marrowbone, East Nelson
and Whitley.
The Heritage Center
Located at 117 East Harrison Street, Sullivan, IL, the Heritage Center houses the
Society offices, Research Library, Member Museum, and printing facilities.

The Research Library
Open Saturday and Monday from 1 to 5 pm and by appointment. It has a large
collection of historical and genealogical data pertaining not only to Moultrie County, but to most of the
continental United States. Limited research is done free for members of the Society who enclose a SASE with
their query.
The Member Museum
Open Saturday and Monday from 1 to 5 pm and by appointment. Arrangements for
special group tours can be made by calling the Heritage Center.

The Moultrie County Heritage Quarterly
Published February, May, August, and November, the Quarterly contains historical
and genealogical data regarding Moultrie County as well as research aids, book reviews, society news and
queries. Members and non-members are encouraged to submit material for possible publication.
Regular Meetings
Regular meetings are held at the Heritage Center at 7 pm the 3rd Thursday of each
month with an Annual Meeting each November. The general public is always welcome to attend.
The
Executive Board meets the 1st Tuesday of each month at 9 am in the Heritage Center Research Library.
No regular meeting is held in December.

Membership
Membership includes The Heritage (twice a year), 12 issues of the Newsletter, free
queries, and free use of the Heritage Library. Dues are based on the calendar year and due each January 1st. Those
joining later in the year receive quarterly back issues for the year joined.
